Small tremor of magnitude 3.5 just reported 62 km northwest of Biella, Switzerland3.5 quake 19 km WSW of Zermatt, Switzerland, 9 Nov 12.56 am (GMT +1)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred after midnight on Monday 9 November 2020 at 12.56 am local time near the village of Breuil-Cervinia, Switzerland, as reported by SED.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Breuil-Cervinia (pop. 800) located 10 km from the epicenter, Paquier (pop. 1000) 14 km away, Valtournenche (pop. 2,200) 14 km away, Maen (pop. 200) 14 km away, Evolène (pop. 1,600) 16 km away, and Aosta (pop. 32,300) 30 km away.
